Former Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame has criticised the ongoing proceedings against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing them as a fundamental departure from Ghana’s long-established legal traditions.
Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM on Tuesday, May 27, Mr Dame stated: “Whatever is going on, as far as I’m concerned, is totally alien and offensive to every rule of justice that this country has been known to have adopted for itself over the decades.”
His comments come amidst growing legal and public debate surrounding the legitimacy of the closed-door inquiry into a petition seeking the Chief Justice’s removal. Justice Torkornoo has challenged the constitutionality of the process and filed an injunction at the Supreme Court.
According to Mr Dame, the Chief Justice remains composed and deeply anchored in her faith.
“She is coping, as she always says. She believes very much in the word of God,” he noted.
He further explained that the suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo drew strength from scripture.
“She said to me that if David was able to bring down a Goliath with an instrument which was supposedly harmless, then yes — anything at all is possible,” he said.
Mr Dame added that her faith is further reinforced by the experiences of renowned figures in history who endured hardship in their pursuit of justice.
“She continues to have faith in the word of God. She also continues to take inspiration from other great men of the world who had to go through such trials and tribulations,” he said.
