Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has explained that recent delays in receiving U.S. visas and passports are due to logistical issues with the United States Postal Service (USPS).
The Minister disclosed this information in Parliament on Wednesday while responding to mounting concerns about late visa deliveries that have caused distress among applicants in recent weeks.
Mr Ablakwa clarified that while visa and passport processing times have improved significantly, the current bottleneck occurs at the final delivery stage handled by USPS.
“While the visa and passport issuance process has significantly improved, the primary challenge remains mainly in delays, largely due to logistical failures by the United States Postal Service,” he noted.
The statement comes as many Ghanaians awaiting important travel documents have expressed frustration over unexpected delays in receiving their visa packages.
According to him, about 490 duly issued visa packages, mailed on the 6th and 9th of June 2025, were not properly scanned, a development that led to tracking difficulties and widespread concern among applicants.
“In response, we have directly engaged USPS to mitigate future disruptions,” the minister assured Parliament.
He explained that measures such as staggering of mail dispatches, limiting them to a maximum of 200 packages per day, have been instituted to improve tracking and enhance delivery efficiency.
