The organisers of the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon have paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, ahead of the highly anticipated event scheduled for July 26 at the Independence Square in Accra.
The delegation, led by Absa Bank’s Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, visited the minister on Thursday, July 3, to update him on preparations and formally invite him and President John Mahama as special guests for what is expected to be one of Ghana’s premier marathon events.
Ms Tamakloe said the visit was part of the organisers’ commitment to building strong partnerships with key stakeholders in government to ensure the successful delivery of the marathon, themed “Your Story Matters.”
She described the event as a celebration of endurance, inclusion, and community, noting that this year’s edition would feature a full 42.2-kilometre race, a 10-kilometre run, walk and jog, and a wheelchair event in both the men's and women’s categories.
Welcoming the delegation, Minister Kofi Adams praised the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting events that promote physical health, national pride, and youth development.
He emphasised the need for deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors to develop the sporting landscape in Ghana.
“Supporting sports is not only a matter of health; it is also about creating wealth and inspiring national pride,” Mr Adams said while commending Absa for investing in athletics.
He encouraged Absa Bank to extend its support beyond marathon running to other sporting disciplines.
“Corporate Ghana must continue to play a critical role in sparking wider interest in sports,” the minister added.
Mr Adams also advised the organisers to work closely with security agencies, emergency medical services, and local authorities to ensure a safe and smoothly coordinated event.
He said strong public-private partnerships were essential for raising the standard of sporting events in the country and fostering greater community involvement.
