The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana marked another milestone in its ongoing 75th-anniversary celebrations with an insightful and emotive lecture delivered by the distinguished academic, poet, and feminist, H.E. Professor Abena P.A. Busia.
Prof. Busia, daughter of the Department’s founder, Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia, explored the profound legacy and continued relevance of sociological inquiry in Ghana through her address titled, “75 Years of Institutionalised Sociological Enquiry in Ghana: A Daughter’s Perspective.” Her reflections seamlessly blended scholarly analysis with intimate personal narratives, underscoring sociology's crucial role in shaping Ghanaian society.
In her compelling presentation, Prof. Busia highlighted sociology’s unique capacity to reveal hidden structures within everyday life, often unnoticed yet profoundly influential. She remarked, “Sociologists make visible what most of us take for granted; they make us see the very structures we live in.” Through vivid metaphors and anecdotes, she illuminated how sociology uncovers the invisible threads connecting individual experiences to broader social contexts.
The memorable session began with the screening of a short documentary celebrating the life and pioneering contributions of Prof. K.A. Busia. It concluded with a commemorative plaque presented to Prof. Abena Busia in recognition of her significant contributions to academia and her continuous support of the Department’s mission and legacy.
The event attracted notable academics, students, and distinguished guests, highlighting the Department’s influential role over the decades in fostering critical sociological thought and research within Ghana and beyond.
