About 25 final-year students of Agona Swedru Senior High School (SHS) in the Central Region have been suspended after allegedly engaging in a violent altercation sparked by a same-sex relationship proposal.
The headmistress, Golda Esi Andam, confirmed the development in an interview with Accra-based Onua News.
According to school authorities, a male student allegedly expressed romantic interest in another, who turned down the proposal.
However, the student who declined the proposal reportedly discussed the matter with some colleagues, who advised him to pretend to have changed his mind and express interest.
After the two agreed to meet, a group of students believed to be friends of the one who rejected the proposal allegedly ambushed and assaulted the 'suitor'.
In retaliation, the assaulted suitor informed his dormitory mates, leading to a reprisal attack.
The confrontation quickly escalated, drawing in several students and forcing the school to intervene.
According to Mrs Andam, all the students implicated were given a fair hearing before the disciplinary action was taken.
“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents,” she said. “They have now realised that the Ghana Education Service does not joke with its code of conduct.”
She emphasised that the disciplinary measure does not deprive the students of their right to education but serves as a warning to others.
Mrs Andam also urged students to strictly adhere to school rules to avoid similar incidents in the future.
