President John Mahama has left Accra for New York, United States, to lead Ghana’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), which begins on Tuesday, September 23.
According to a statement released by the presidency on Sunday, September 21, the President is scheduled to deliver Ghana’s address to the General Assembly on Thursday, September 25.
In addition to his main address, President Mahama will take part in key side events in his capacity as the African Union’s Champion for Financial Institutions. According to the presidency, he will host two major sessions focused on Africa’s economic and institutional development.
His programme in New York also includes bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary-General, several heads of state, and other global leaders, including the President of the Rockefeller Foundation.
President Mahama is expected to engage with the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce and will also make a historic appearance at NASDAQ, where he is scheduled to ring the closing bell.
First Lady Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama is part of the delegation. She will attend and address side events organised by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD). She is also set to deliver the keynote speech at a special World Vision International prayer service dedicated to the world’s children.
The President’s delegation includes Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Executive Secretary Dr Callistus Mahama, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Deputy Chief of Staff (Finance and Administration) and Technical Adviser to the First Lady Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (MP), Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Minister for Trade Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Simon Madjie.
President Mahama and his delegation are expected to return to Ghana on September 30.
