Twenty-four years after playing in the U-17 FIFA World Cup, ex-Ghana International and seasoned pundit, Laryea Kingston, will make a return to the tournament this time as a coach in charge of Uganda on a two-year contract.
Kingston, who previously handled Ghana's U-17 team, was unveiled to the public by the Ugandan FA earlier today in Kampala.
Added to his responsibilities, Kingston will also coach the Under-15 and Under-20 national teams.
"This is a vision that is materialising in stages. First, I wanted to play there, and it happened. Now, I want to go back to that stage as a coach, and it's happening. It's an opportunity to bring the young players together to achieve something," he told Joy Sports.
Kingston, who earned 41 caps for Ghana at the senior level, brings to the Ugandan table a wealth of experience, having played for two prominent clubs in his native Ghana. He played for the CAF Champions League and Super Cup champions, Accra Hearts of Oak and former Ghana Premier League Champions, Great Olympics.
"I have gained experience over the years and would want to give credit to the Right to Dream Academy and its founder, Tom Vernon. He saw something in me and pushed me to pursue it. Today, I'm glad I took that decision. "
Kingston's coaching journey started at the Right to Dream Academy, where he was in charge of the U-18 team. He was appointed head coach of Ghana's Under-17 male team, the Black Starlets, between 2023 and 2024. After stepping away from the role midway through the WAFU Zone B tournament in 2024, he took a brief break and was appointed head coach of the Rush Point Academy in Florida, USA.
He has also played many television pundit roles for major networks, including the Broadcast of Euro 2020 by Joy Prime Channel at the Multimedia Group, AFCON by Super Sport DSTV and the then Joy Sports Channel on Multi TV.
