Newly appointed Chair of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC), Achim Steiner, says his leadership will focus on creating fresh momentum and global initiatives to accelerate progress on sustainable development.
Speaking after his appointment by the HSC Council, the former United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator expressed optimism about the conference’s potential to serve as a catalyst for cooperation and innovation in addressing the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
“I am delighted to be able to contribute to creating new momentum and initiatives for the future with this global platform,” Mr. Steiner said. “In a time of growing geopolitical tensions, we need new trust, new alliances, and new approaches to international cooperation.”
Mr. Steiner’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, an international platform that brings together leaders from government, business, academia, and civil society to advance collaboration on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He emphasized that the HSC’s mission, to bridge divides and foster forward-looking dialogue, is crucial at a time when global consensus on sustainability and climate action faces increasing strain.
“Across borders and differences, HSC brings together leaders from all sectors and regions of the world to foster partnerships that make a real contribution to sustainable development,” he added.
Mr. Steiner, who served eight years as UNDP Administrator until June 2025 and previously led the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), brings a wealth of experience in global environmental governance and development policy.
Under his leadership, the HSC is expected to intensify efforts to mobilize cross-sectoral partnerships, expand its global reach, and shape policy dialogues that drive actionable solutions for a sustainable future.
