Arise Ghana, a pressure group, says it is set to picket the United States Embassy in Accra tomorrow, January 20, to demand the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to face what it describes as “justice.”
Ken Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, has been at the centre of multiple public controversies over alleged financial mismanagement and procurement-related concerns.
In recent years, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) announced investigations into several transactions approved during his tenure, including issues linked to revenue assurance contracts, public debt restructuring processes, and payments made under sole-sourcing arrangements.
His lawyers have previously stated that he remains willing to cooperate with any lawful investigative process, citing health and security concerns for his temporary stay outside the country.
Speaking on Pulse, a leading member of the group, Selorm Dzramadao, said the protest has been formally communicated to both the US Embassy and the Ghana Police Service, with assurances of adequate security for demonstrators.
“We have duly notified the US Embassy. We have done the same to the Ghana Police Service, and they have assured us of sufficient protection,” he said. “We are commencing at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow at the US Embassy.”
Mr Dzramadao called on media houses to provide live coverage of the protest, describing it as a historic moment.
“I invite all your reporters to come and cover it live because it’s going to be historic—that for the first time, a former Minister of Finance has fled this country,” he claimed.
He insisted that Mr Ofori-Atta deliberately left Ghana to avoid accountability, rejecting suggestions that the former minister merely travelled abroad through official channels.
“He ran away from justice, and he’s still evading justice by giving us contrived excuses,” Mr Dzramadao alleged, referring to claims that the former minister fears a hostile reception if he returns.
