Ghanaian entrepreneur Kwame Sowu Jnr has called on the government to deliberately integrate entrepreneurship education into Ghana’s educational system, arguing that such a move would strengthen human capital and significantly boost economic development.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Sowu Jnr urged the Ministry of Trade and Industry, particularly the Registrar-General’s Department, to take the lead in making entrepreneurship a mainstream national priority.

According to him, conversations around wealth creation, especially through entrepreneurship, have not been sufficiently prioritized in Ghana, resulting in gaps in skills development and limiting the country’s economic growth potential.

He stressed the need for intentional state support, noting that many aspects of business development require institutional backing.

“This is where I believe the state must come in. There are certain things about business that the average person needs the state to support them. For instance, to start a business, you must go through incorporation and registration processes,” he said.

Mr. Sowu Jnr pointed out that in other jurisdictions, entrepreneurs are provided with comprehensive startup documentation, including guidance on intellectual property protection.

“Elsewhere, you are given startup pack documents, which include intellectual property considerations, especially if you are creating something unique that must be protected. In those areas, the state tends to protect entrepreneurs,” he explained.

He reiterated that entrepreneurship education must be deliberately embedded across all levels of learning to encourage more Ghanaians to consciously pursue it as a viable career path.

“The conversation about wealth creation, particularly from the point of view of entrepreneurship, has not been mainstreamed. I believe the Registrar-General’s Department, working through the Ministry of Trade, must take this up, educate Ghanaians and ensure entrepreneurship becomes part of the curriculum at the university level and across our educational system, so more people can intentionally choose entrepreneurship as an option,” he added.
