Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticised the government over what he describes as a failure to provide adequate employment opportunities for the youth, following the fatal incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra last year.
Speaking on the November disaster, which occurred during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the deaths of six job seekers and the injuries sustained by several others were a stark indictment of the government’s record on job creation.
"On job, six strong young women died in a stampede at El-Wak sports stadium during recruitment when a country turns a recruitment gate into a graveyard. It is a government that has failed our youth," he said on the floor of parliament on Tuesday, February 3.
Since the incident, the government has enhanced the recruitment process to decongest applicants. The system has been significantly improved through increased online engagement.
The government has also pledged to compensate the bereaved families by offering them slots in any of the country’s security services.
The government has also reshuffled the leadership overseeing the recruitment process at the Ghana Armed Forces.
