Students of Academic City University have won the trophy in the Sustainable Packaging category at the 2026 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards, organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).
The team, which included Mohammed Yasin Abdul Wahab, Sarah Akpedze Amewu, and Jeremy Acquaah, was recognised for their project, Eco Haven Waakye Packaging.
Their project was recognised for its focus on environmental sustainability, practicality and global relevance.
The competition attracted 246 entries from 90 educational institutions across 23 countries, emphasising emerging talent in packaging design and sustainability.
In a congratulatory message, the WPO described the competition as showcasing exceptional talent from the next generation of packaging professionals and noted that the Academic City team’s work demonstrated global excellence in sustainable packaging.
The award adds to Academic City’s growing success in innovation competitions. Earlier, the university placed first runner-up at the Royal Crown Packaging Competition, organised by Royal Crown Packaging Limited and the Institute of Packaging Ghana.
The competition promotes creative solutions to real-world packaging challenges, and the university’s strong performance highlighted its students’ competitive edge and readiness for global recognition.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr Lucy Agyepong, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Academic City University, commended the students for their commitment and creativity.
According to her, the achievement not only raises the profile of Ghanaian youth on the global stage but also reflects the university’s strong commitment to sustainability and industry collaboration.
“Their achievement shows what Ghanaian youth can achieve when given the right opportunities and support. It also inspires the next generation to think beyond boundaries,” she added.
