Media personality and entrepreneur Dr. Desmond Kofi Annan FCGBA has called for a rethink of the traditional breadwinner role, arguing that the long held expectation for men to carry the financial burden of a household places unnecessary pressure on them.
Speaking during a recent discussion on the Brotherhood show, Dr Annan said providing for a household should be a shared responsibility between two adults in a marriage.
“The conversation has to be situated well,” Grandpa states that women are now more educated and active in the workforce, unlike in “the olden days.”
Dr Annan agreed with the point, stressing the need for a more nuanced understanding of the issue. He defined a breadwinner as “somebody who earns an income and takes care of a household,” but explained that this responsibility should not rest on one person alone.
According to him, societal norms have changed significantly over time. He observed that “those days women were confined,” pointing to the limited roles women had in the past.
Dr Annan cautioned that holding firmly to outdated expectations can create tension in relationships and homes. He noted that “people even some people even have come from home just because of some of these things.”
His central message, he explained, is that financial responsibility in marriage should be collective.
“ this whole business about bread winners conversation should be the sole responsibility of two adults who have been converted into a matrimonial home not it’s as simple as that. “
Dr Annan believes it is time to rethink the traditional breadwinner concept and embrace a more collaborative approach to providing for households.
