Government says it is taking steps to safeguard jobs and ensure continuity at the Damang Mine as its lease approaches expiration.
This follows a statement shared on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which confirmed that the mining lease held by Abosso Goldfields Limited will expire on April 18, 2026, after a one-year extension.
The Ministry stressed the importance of the mine to the national economy, stating that “the Damang Mine remains a key national asset that can continue contributing significantly to Ghana’s gold production, export earnings, and employment.”
To manage the transition, government says it has initiated measures to protect jobs, maintain service contracts, and reassure all stakeholders.
According to the statement, “these steps form part of efforts to secure a credible investor and operator through a competitive bidding process, ensuring the mine’s continued contribution to national development.”
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, noting that the transition process will be handled with responsible stewardship.
It added that “government remains committed to ensuring that the Damang Mine continues to deliver lasting value for host communities and the nation at large.”
Authorities further indicated that the process is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s mining sector while promoting sustainable, Ghanaian-centred investment.
The Ministry assured the public that it will continue to engage stakeholders as it works toward a smooth transition ahead of the lease expiry.
