Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been released after the State discontinued the case over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah at the Dansoman Circuit Court.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after spending about a week on remand in connection with the alleged threat.
He was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he was alleged to have threatened the life of Mr Ampofo Ankrah.
His arrest followed a call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
The Dansoman Circuit Court subsequently discontinued the case, paving the way for Ayitey Powers’ release after his appearance on Wednesday.
