Asthma Ghana, a local non-governmental organisation, has donated 100 aerochambers, also known as valved holding spacers, valued at more than GH¢50,000 to the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) to support respiratory care.
The donation was led by the organisation’s Founder and Executive Director, Prof Victor Wutor, who was supported by Mr John Desmond Wutor.
The medical devices were officially received on behalf of the hospital management by the Public Relations Officer and members of the hospital administration during a brief ceremony at the facility’s administrative grounds.
The donation is intended to support the hospital’s Asthma Clinic and emergency units by improving the delivery of inhaled medication to patients with asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions.
Supporting inhaler therapy
Aerochambers are medical devices used with metered-dose inhalers (MDIs). They slow the delivery of medication from the inhaler, making it easier for patients, particularly young children and older adults who may struggle with inhaler coordination, to inhale the medication effectively into their lungs.
Speaking during the presentation, Prof Wutor said the donation formed part of Asthma Ghana’s broader mission to promote public awareness, educate communities and provide essential asthma management tools to healthcare facilities across the country.
“Managing asthma remains a core health priority in Ghana, and correct inhaler technique can mean the difference between life and death. By providing these 100 aerochambers, we hope to lighten the load for families and give clinicians the tools they need to improve patient outcomes right here in the Volta Region,” Prof Wutor stated.
Hospital welcomes support
Receiving the donation, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer and administration expressed gratitude to Prof Wutor, Mr John Desmond Wutor and Asthma Ghana for the intervention.
The hospital administration said the devices would be deployed to the Paediatrics Department, Accident and Emergency Unit, and the specialised outpatient Asthma Clinic.
The administration noted that respiratory care remains an important component of emergency management and said partnerships with civil society organisations could help vulnerable patients access essential treatment while reducing the financial burden on families.
Call for wider collaboration
Asthma Ghana also appealed to corporate organisations, pharmaceutical companies and policymakers to support efforts to expand access to respiratory healthcare.
The organisation, which operates from Viva Atlantis Pharmacy in Sowutuom, Accra, said it plans to build on the initiative by extending patient support clubs and providing additional clinical training resources to healthcare professionals across Ghana.
