A growing collaboration between corporate institutions and public health facilities is powering a nationwide blood mobilisation campaign, with MTN Ghana’s Valentine donation drive emerging as a significant pillar of support for emergency healthcare delivery.
This year’s campaign — led by MTN Ghana with support from CalBank and clinical teams from Ho Teaching Hospital — is being rolled out simultaneously across dozens of centres nationwide, including a major collection exercise at Kpando Senior High School.
Regional Lead for MTN Volta and Oti, Mawuli Katahena, said the scale and coordination behind the campaign are deliberate, aimed at delivering measurable impact on national blood reserves.
“We are mobilising communities at scale because the need is urgent. Blood saves lives every day in our hospitals. By organising this across multiple regions at the same time, we are turning corporate reach into real health support,” he stated.
Health officials at the event stressed that such partnerships have become essential, particularly given the region’s heavy reliance on student donors.
Senior Staff Nurse at the Blood Bank Unit of Ho Teaching Hospital, Doris Esenam Dzah, emphasised that without broader community participation, shortages would persist.
“We cannot rely on only students for blood donation. When they are on break, supplies drop, and emergencies don’t wait. We need workers, churches, organisations, and the general public to make voluntary blood donation a regular habit,” she urged.
Organisers say the campaign, which has evolved into one of MTN Ghana’s flagship corporate social responsibility initiatives, is steadily transforming Valentine’s Day from a celebration of gifts into a nationwide, life-giving movement.
