2012 Presidential Candidate for the United Front Party (UFP), Akwasi Addai, popularly called Odike, has given up the fight for the ownership and control of the party.
He has formed a new political party called United People’s Party (UPP), according to the Daily Guide newspaper.
The formation of the UPP comes after months of open fight between Odike and Nana Agyenim Boateng aka Gyataba over who should control the UFP.
The sources said Odike has realised that he can no longer fight Gyataba, the UFP National Chairman, over the ownership of the Kumasi-based party.
He has therefore decided to leave the UFP in peace and form his own political party in order to save his political career.
Sources said Odike's newly formed party has a clock as its symbol and it also has 'UPP yemere nie’ (UPP this is our time) as its slogan.
Odike, Daily Guide gathered, has completed the necessary documentations which he has already sent to the Electoral Commission (EC) awaiting certification.
The paper also learnt that he is secretly mobilising people, especially in the hinterlands, to join the UPP.
Meanwhile, there is maneuvering in the UFP currently with regard to the person who would lead the party as flagbearer in 2016.
One Henry Adubofuor, who is said to be very close to the first lady, Lordina Mahama, is said to be working secretly to land the enviable position.
Sources said Mr Adubofuor had already held a series of meetings with Gyataba concerning his (Adubofuor's) intention to lead the UFP for the 2016 polls.
