A former Minister of Finance in the NPP administration, Yaw Osafo Marfo, is supporting calls on government to tax properties particularly those in first class residential areas as an additional revenue source. He notes that no amount of external support will be adequate if the country does not mobilize enough funds from within. Mr. Osafo Marfo therefore wants government to take bold initiatives that will help improve revenue generation locally. The former Finance Minister was speaking to Joy Business after a presentation at the annual lectures in honour of Ferdinand Ayim, a former Special Assistant at the Tourism Ministry. “We should be able to raise more revenue from properties, that’s very important,” he stressed. Mr. Osafo Marfo added that government could generate so much revenue from the small to medium scale sector of the economy. He said while many of these business fulfil their tax obligations, others are negligent hence the need for a swift government action. Source: Joy Business/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
