The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit is to provide counseling for eight traumatized children alleged to have been defiled by a 65-year-old American at Adjomanikope in Ada. The suspect has been remanded in police custody.
The accused, Patrick Kent Labash, who pleaded not guilty to one count of having unnatural canal knowledge and seven counts of defiling the victims, would re-appear in court on September 22, 2009.
The eight children include six girls and two boys.
The alleged victims, aging between 3 and 12 years were lured with food, candies and movies into the accused person’s room where he defiled them.
Labash made his victims suck at his erected penis, discharged semen into their mouths and forced them to swallow it while he recorded it on video.
Speaking to Citi News, Head of DOVVSU in Tema, ASP Rebecca Nyamah, condemned the situation where parents look on with fondness while their children make friends with foreigners they hardly know.
“These are going on in the communities. Most of these foreign people they come, they entice our children; they will be following them here and there. Some parents too are happy that their children have got a friend from a foreign land”, she said.
According to her, one of the victims' parents reported the incident to a local FM station but was told to provide concrete evidence.
ASP Nyamah pleaded with the media to refer such cases to the police for redress if they are in doubt.
“Most of these FM stations, whenever they have any information and they are in doubt, they can also assist the complainant or whoever to go to the police or if it is a medical problem go to the hospital”, she encouraged.
Meanwhile, Labash has refused to speak or give a statement in the absence of a counsel.
