The Awutu-Senya District Assembly has ordered owners of unauthorized containers and temporary structures along the Kasoa portion of the Accra-Cape Coast highway to remove them by the close of Monday, September 28, this year.
According to the Assembly, any person who failed to comply with the five-day ultimatum would face the full rigorous of the law.
Nana Adeiso Osupram IV, Commander of the Kasoa City Guards, who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, said the decision of the assembly was to ensure easy traffic control and human movement on the pavements at Kasoa.
“It has become necessary to de-congest the Kasoa Township of unauthorized structures,” he said. “As a fast growing business town, Kasoa needs to get uninterrupted traffic to save the lives commuters while business must be conducted in a peaceful manner, especially on market days.”
Nana Osupram stated that pedestrians, especially children, were knocked down daily by vehicles, because of congestion at both sides of the road.
The Commander noted that the plan to de-congest Kasoa was long over due because the Assembly had already given them three months’ grace period to remove the structures but they had not been complied.
Nana Osupram stated that 50 City Guards who were recently trained at Kasoa by the Assembly would not only assist in traffic management, but also in revenue collection in the areas of building permits and basic and property rates to improve the financial position of the assembly.
He said the District Chief Executive, Mr Nuhu Adams, had pledged to release vehicles to the City Guards to start night patrols at Kasoa and its environs to complement the efforts of the Police to reduce crime.
He said the City Guards would also check indiscriminate dumping of refuse and littering on the streets to promote environmental cleanliness to avoid communicable diseases.
