The Inspector General of Police has blamed the deteriorating state of discipline in the police service on lack of proper supervision. Paul Tawiah Quaye made the assertion during an interaction with police officers in Koforidua. The IGP said, as a security agency, the police must ensure that discipline rules the institution to ensure that the public volunteers information. "Individual members of the public will not be prepared to volunteer any valuable pieces of information if they do not trust and have confidence in the police officer that they are dealing with," he said. He advised police officers to stick to the service’s code of conduct, stressing that senior police officers need to ensure that their subordinates obey rules. Mr. Quaye also stated that he will discontinue the practice where some police officers under service inquiry are allowed to go on peacekeeping duties. "Quality, they say, begins at home and facing criminal justice imposes upon us a responsibility to be conscious of what we do in our own internal institutional administration before we have the moral nerve to talk about a need for judicious [method] in dealing with criminal suspects at the court of justice," he said. The IGP also conceded that public confidence in the police has dropped. He stressed that "the expected public confidence is based on mutual respect and justice" the service members will observe. Incidents of mob justice have largely been underlined by public perception that the police do not ensure that aggrieved persons get justice.
