The Vice President John Dramani Mahama is chairing a meeting of the Police Council to take a decision on the fate of former Police Director of Operations, Kofi Boakye today.
The council will be examining a report by a committee tasked to look into a petition by the former police chief to be re-instated.
ACP Kofi Boakye was interdicted in 2007 following the recommendation of the Georgina Wood Committee which investigated the popular MV Benjamin cocaine issue.
That investigation also led to the conviction of Kwabena Amaning, alias Tagor, and Issa Abass the same year.
The two men have since been released after the Appeals Court overturned their sentence.
The committee had wanted the ACP prosecuted but the police administration interdicted him pending further investigations.
However, a day before leaving office, former President John Kufuor reinstated him and ordered the police administration to pay him what was due him.
But upon the assumption of the Mills administration, ACP Kofi Boakye was instructed to remain on leave.
Close associates of the former police chief tell Joy News although he has qualified as a lawyer, he cannot practice the profession because he has not been given the go-ahead by the Police Council.
They argue that there is no foundation for the Georgina Wood committee’s recommendation for the ACP to be indicted in the cocaine scandal and are optimistic that he will be re-instated.
But that will have to be determined by the Vice President and members of the Police Council as they meet on Wednesday.
Spokesperson for the Vice President, John Jinapor, said Mr Mahama's meeting is consistent with a promise earlier this year to bring closure to the Kofi Boakye saga.
