A Friends of 21st September Born Association has been inaugurated in Winneba in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region, in commemoration of the centenary celebrations of the birth of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The President of the association, Reverend Eldad Bonney, Lecturer at the Psychology and Education Department of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) said the idea was also conceived to propagate the ideology of Dr Nkrumah and in honour of the dedication of the Big Six, who fought for the independence of Ghana.
“It will also inculcate in the youth the need to discipline themselves and know that the destiny of the nation lies in their hands,” he charged.
Rev. Bonney, who is also the Director of the Counselling Unit of the UEW, noted that members of the association would support the fight against illiteracy, drug abuse, environmental degradation and the promotion of peace in Ghana.
The President said the members would help in the fight against disease, ignorance and obnoxious cultural practices, which militate against the development of the country, emphasizing that the association has no political connotation.
Rev. Bonney suggested the government revives the "Operation feed your self" concept introduced by the Acheampong Regime and charged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to initiate programmes to produce enough food for local consumption and export.
He said Ghanaians should be encouraged to eat and patronize made-in-Ghana goods to sustain the local industry.
Rev. Bonney appealed to the government to rehabilitate all road networks in major food and cocoa growing areas in the country to enable farmers to bring their produce to marketing centres to prevent post-harvest losses.
He called on Ghanaians born on 21st September who supports the vision of Dr Nkrumah and the Big six to join the association online by logging on to: Friends of 21st September born @ Yahoo.com ".
