Police at Boaman in the Afigya Kwabre District are investigating the alleged poisoning of food items meant for the preparation of meals for about 900 school children under the National School Feeding Programme (NSFP) at Kyekyewere. Authorities of the Local Authority Primary School claimed some unidentified persons had broken into a kitchen and poured an unknown substance suspected to be poison in a stew and a container of soaked maize. The incident left about 900 pupils without food for the day. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Kaakyire Oppong Kyekyeku, ordered investigations into the matter as soon as reports reached him on the matter. The school’s matron told the police the caterers reported for work Thursday morning to find the door to the kitchen broken and the padlock taken away. She said they became suspicious when they discovered an oily and brownish substance in the maize and the stew they had prepared the previous night. Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah reports that the DCE suspects detractors of the NDC could be behind the alleged poisoning. “I think the time for active politicking is over; however, that cannot be ruled out. There are a lot of interest groups at this point. Some people were handling it before it was taken [away] from them,” he indicated. “It is the work of the devil, the wicked mind,” Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku said in a worried tone.
