Some students of the University of Ghana who wanted to be registered for the on-going mass registration exercise by the National Identification Authority (NIA) were refused registration because they wanted to use their student’s ID cards to do the registration.
The NIA's criteria specify any of the national identity documents as standard.
The NIA is currently registering Ghanaians six years and above in its first phase of the mass registration in the Greater Accra Region.
The Authority requires an applicant to hold either; a Voter’s ID card, NHIS Card, Passport, Driver’s Licence, SSNIT number, Birth Certificate, Baptismal Card, Weighing Card or a Sworn Affidavit.
The students expressed concern that they do not have the forms of identity cards or documents requested by the NIA for the registration.
Reacting to the concerns by the students, the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Dr William Ahadzi told Myjoyonline.com that, “We have resolved the issue and we have given the go ahead for the students to use their student ID cards.”
He explained that the main aim of the NIA is to capture the biometric data of applicants.
He said since the University of Ghana is a valid and national institution, the authority has given the students the go ahead to use the cards but stressed that the system will detect fraudsters who will try to take advantage of that directive.
Dr Ahadzi said due to the pressure caused by the huge population size of Accra, the NIA has increased the number of Mobile Registration Workstation Operators at each registration centre, from two to four and therefore does not see an extension to the stipulated ten days of the registration’s first phase.
He said the NIA is yet to formally discuss what to do with respect to the national holiday on Friday. He said the authority may either register on that day or extend the exercise by a day.
