A District Magistrate Court at Kade, has sentenced Amakye Kennedy, a 28-year-old barber, to two years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing a goat valued at GH¢50.The court additionally ordered the convict, to pay GH¢70 as compensation to the owner of the goat, Agnes Amawuda.Kennedy, who recently returned from prison after serving 12 months in jail for stealing, pleaded guilty.Police Inspector D.T. Nartey said the complainant was rearing two goats in her house, near the Boadua market and the convict lived at Kade.Prosecution said on November 11, at about 1:00 a.m., a witness in the case saw Kennedy kill a goat by twisting its neck and hid it between bags of charcoal and attempted to kill another goat.Inspector Nartey said that when the witness tried to arrest the convict, he struggled with him (witness) and he raised the alarm.Some people assisted the witness to overpower Kennedy and he was sent to the Akwatia Police station.Prosecution said Amawuda went to the Police station and identified the dead goat as belonging to her.Inspector Nartey said Kennedy in a caution statement to the Police admitted the offence.Kennedy told the court that he wanted to sell the goat to enable him buy barbering tools.The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) special task force, in collaboration with the police, have rounded up stray animals in some parts of the Accra Metropolis and the owners fined GH¢43 each per goat or sheep.Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, AMA Public Health Director, told the GNA in an interview that 41 animals were rounded up at Bubiashie, Odorkor, Chorkor, Darkuman, James Town and Banana Inn.He said, the exercise would continue to rid Accra of animals roaming about on ceremonial streets creating nuisance.Dr Boateng said pieces of advice, notices, education and several warnings to the owners to relocate their animals had not been heeded hence the exercise.Advised those keeping cows in their homes in the metropolis to relocate them or have them confiscated and sold.Source: Ghanaian Times/Ghana
