Ghana U20 star Clifford Aboagye says the Ghana Football Association will be making a big mistake if they relieve Sellas Tetteh of his post as head of the Black Satellites team.
There have been calls for Tetteh to be sacked after failing to reach the semi final - a target he set for himself - at this year’s Fifa U20 World Cup in New Zealand.
But Clifford, who has worked with the coach at two World Cup tournaments noted that the Liberty Professionals technical director is the best person for the U20 job.
“He has done it before, won the U20 World Cup so I don’t think this is the time we should tell him to go,” said Aboagye, in an exclusive interview with Joy Sports.
“I know him very well and I have been with him in four major tournaments and he is a very good coach. I think he should rather be encouraged to do something better, the fact that we couldn’t reach the semi finals at the last tournament shouldn’t be a reason for people to say he should be sacked.
“For me he is technically good I think he has to maintain his position.”
Aboagye, together with a few other players, excelled at the tournament although Ghana was knocked out of the round of 16 of the tournament.
Black Stars difficulty?
It is not abnormal in Ghana for teams that do not do well at youth level to be ignored when places for senior teams are being considered. Will the same fate befall Aboagye's team that crashed out of the U20 World Cup?
“I don’t think that is the point but I believe it is up to the coach and his technical team to choose who is ready or not ready to play in the Black Stars,” Aboagye noted.
“We as footballers it is always a dream to play for the senior national team and we are ready for any call up.”
Clifford Aboagye plays his club football in Spain with Granada.
