Prof. Kofi Awoonor, Chairman of the Council of State, has sent a strong warning to drivers using illegal routes that the government would not tolerate them.
Delivering a speech on behalf of President Atta Mills to officially open the new 23-hectre Achimota Transport Terminal, Accra, he noted that such deviant actions increase the government’s cost of developing the cities.
“Let me now caution all who have developed (their own) right-of-way or any unapproved sites that this would no longer be countenanced.”
He acknowledged the traffic situation in the capital, and maintained that the solution to the compounding traffic congestion does not only lie in constructing more roads, but the efficient management of the existing ones.
He championed the need to limit or ban parking along some roads, encourage increased pedestrian movement, encourage use of public transport, and possibly encourage use of bicycles to reduce traffic jams.
In addition, he said all the traffic lights in the city would be rehabilitated and coordinated to ease the congestion.
Prof. Awoonor announced that the government was developing a pilot bus rapid system to assist in the delivery of quality public transport in Accra.
He paid glowing tribute to the Kufuor administration for starting the bus terminal and commended the ruling government for completing it, and declared that the culture of abandoning projects by previous governments is “banned forever”.
The Chairman of the Council of State said the government is committed to meeting the needs of the general public and not a selected few.
He urged stakeholders of the new terminal to use dialogue to address all challenges in running the terminal.
