The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) was on Wednesday asked to decongest the Accra Tema Lorry Station and free the area of hawkers.
Mr. S. K. Atitsogbui, acting Welfare Officer of the Station, who made the call to the Ghana News Agency, said commercial vehicle owners, hawkers/traders and commuters are all competing for the same space which was supposed to serve as a vehicle boarding station.
He said the invasion by the hawkers made it difficult for drivers to maneuver their way these days, which had created a messy situation in the area.
According to him when a driver honked a horn, the hawkers would not heed, thus it was slowing their service to passengers and other activities.
Mr. Atitsogbui, who is also the Chairman of Accra-New Town branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (TUC), said the area meant for pedestrians have also been taken over by the hawkers.
