A group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Hohoe is backing the opposition New Patriotic Party's call for new voters register.
The Votla Region group says it has evidence to prove the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) carted some 6,000 people from neighbouring Togo to vote in the 2012 general elections.
Citing a document allegedly obtained from the office of the Hohoe North Constituency of the NDC, the group claimed that the NDC budgeted for Biometric Registration in nine communities in Togo in the lead up the last general elections.
The communities in Togo mentioned in the alleged expenditure document of the Hohoe North branch of the NDC are Yekpa, Utuka, Adeta, and Kudzra. The rest are Kudzraga, Kudzravi, Kumah and Dzedzrame.
The document dated January 1, 2012, allegedly indicates that the amount spent in the ‘’Agenda Togo’’ project was GH₵18,000.00.
The group says that document alone is proof that the current electoral roll is not credible.
NPP vice presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia displayed photos of purported Togolese voters in Ghana’s register to back calls for a new one.
According to Dr Bawumia, there are more than 76,000 Togolese nationals registered in Ghana to vote.
However, some Ghanaians in Togo held a press conference shortly to play down Dr Bawumia’s assertion. According to the group, not even political parties in Togo has access to the Togolese electoral roll.
Spokesperson for the ‘Concerned Citizens of Hohoe’ Godson Simpri told the press in Hohoe Monday that the counterclaim by the Ghanaian Citizens in Togo is part of ‘’an orchestrated attempt by the NDC to distort the findings of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.’’
“We would like to categorically state that any opposition political party that has a seat in parliament and a member of INEC in Togo has an access to the voters’ register. We therefore request the so called group to produce evidence that the EC in Togo could not give the register to a third party,” said Godson Simpri.
The Hohoe group is calling on Ghanaians to support the call for anew voters’ register ‘’for the sake of peace and the integrity of the 2016 general elections’’.
