The People’s National Convention (PNC) although believes the current voters’ register is tainted, it is kicking against calls for a new one.
The party has joined forces with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to kick against the creation of a new voters’ register.
Some political parties led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have made a strong case for a new register after claiming the current one is bloated with foreigners.
In a two-page proposal submitted to the Electoral Commission, the PNC argued a new register will not solve the issues raised.
General Secretary of the party, Bernard Mornah suggested a better option of cleaning the current register.
“In the long term we should infuse the Births and Deaths register with the national identification and that the mandate of compiling the national identification as was originally contained in our laws should be reversed.
“We have identified non-Ghanaians in the register you just go to court and ensure that those whose names are on the register who are not supposed to be there are removed. That will lead to a more credible register because we have done register upon register and we still come complaining that it is bloated”, Mr. Mornah said.
He proposed that those whose names appeared multiple times and foreigners on the register are identified and punished in accordance with the law.
On the other hand, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) believes calls for a new register are in order.
General Secretary Nii Armah Akomfrah cited the irregularities they witnessed in Jomoro in the Western Region during the last election as their basis for their call for a new register.
“It is not credible, we cannot continue to have elections with the same register when we know it is bloated by 10,000 people who are minors or aliens...” he said.
The Electoral Commission is expected to hold a meeting with the political parties and stakeholders to deliberate on submitted proposals after which a final decision will be made.
