Ghana midfielder Opoku Agyemang has told KickOffGhana.com of how he could not help but cry after doctors told him he will be out for six months and effectively miss the World Cup.
The hard working midfielder was almost certain to make the Ghana squad after he emerged as Milovan Rajevac's latest favourite but a cruciate ligament injury has knocked down his hopes.
"It happened in an Asian Champions League game and when the doctors told me about the level of injury, I cried," he told KickOffGhana.com.
"I know I am missing out on a huge chance to play on a stage every player craves for but it has already happened. Naturally though I am very down at the moment. They say the muscles in my knees are torn."
He will have surgery in Qatar next week and hopes he can return a stronger, better player.
"I have many players suffer similar injuries and come back so I am hopeful. It will be tough to sit out for that long but I can't do anything about it."
Agyemang suffered the injury while playing for his club in their Asian Champions League 3-0 thrashing as the hands of Saudi giants Al Hilal on Wednesday.
The 20-year old won hearts during the 2010 Nations Cup with his tireless running down the flank but was also often criticised for the quality of his final delivery.
The injury could pave the way for a return to the Black Stars of Quincy Owusu Abeyie who has been in good form lately for troubled English Premiership club Portsmouth.
