There was drama at a Magistrate Court in the Ashanti Region, Tuesday when a couple standing trial for allegedly abusing a two-year-old boy was discharged only to be rearrested by the police.
The couple, Nana Oti and Rita Oti now face more charges at a higher court - Circuit Court.
Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor told Joy News the couple had a mountain of solidarity from family members and well-wishers all of whom had come to the Magistrate Court to witness the process.
When the case was called the prosecution withdrew all charges against the couple, an action which forced the judge to discharge them.
But the freedom of the couple and the apparent excitement by the well-wishers were short-lived when the police rearrested the couple immediately after they stepped out of the court.
The prosecutor told Asare Donkor the nature of the case and the degree of harm caused to the two-year-old meant the case would have to be taken to a higher court.
The father of the boy who is residing in Nigeria is said to have ordered that the boy be handed over to the couple to take care of him.
But the care givers were a bit brutish in their methods of discipline.
For eating out, the suspects allegedly burnt with a hot iron the fingers of the young boy who was in their care.
The boy was sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he is currently on admission. He lost two of his fingers initially but a surgery conducted on the hand left him with no fingers at all.
The prosecution wants stiffer punishment for the couple.
Meanwhile, family members of the couple are threatening the life of Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor.
They accuse him of over-exaggerating what is a normal incident that happens in many homes.
