A 26- year-old student, Prossper Agbadzi, who attempted to kill his sister's boyfriend but ended up taking the life of his aunt, has been sentenced to death by the Koforidua High Court.
This followed a unanimous decision by a jury, which found him guilty of murder.
Agbadzi committed the offence when he was 22 and a form two student of Peki Senior High School in the Volta Region.
Not satisfied with the relationship between his sister, Christiana Agbadzi, and her boyfriend, Agbadzi, who is to die by hanging, was said to have gone into his room and brought out a single-barrelled gun to shoot the sister's boyfriend, Kwasi, but missed him.
Rather, he ended up shooting his aunt, who was standing by. The incident occurred at Asikuma in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court presided over by Mr Justice G. S. Suurrebareh, a state attorney, Mr Fred Tettteh, said in the evening of January 2, 2006, the sister of the convict, Christiana Agbadzi, 18, collected a mobile phone from his boyfriend, Kwasi, who also lived at Asikuuma.
The prosecutor said the convict and his mother, Avleshi Sekewho, who were worried over the whereabouts of Christiana, went out to look for her and found her at about 9:30 p.m with the mobile phone of her boyfriend in her possession.
Suspicious that Kwasi, the boyfriend, was flirting with his sister, the convict seized the mobile phone from her and took it home.
Mr Tetteh said 30 minutes later, the boyfriend, accompanied by his cousin, John Dayosi, went to the house of the convict to collect his mobile phone.
While the boyfriend was demanding the phone, an exchange of words ensued between the boyfriend and the convict.
Agbadzi went into his room and pulled out a gun, which he fired at Kwasi and his cousin but missed them and rather killed his aunt instantly.
