Following recent calls on the Attorney General for the immediate prosecution of some former public office holders perceived to be corrupt, the Former Chief Executive Officer of the erstwhile Ghana at 50 Secretariat, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby says he is not afraid to go to jail.
Dr. Wereko Brobbey in an interview with Kwaku Sakyi Addo on Sunday said although he does not want to go to jail, imprisonment is not something that scares him.
His name together with a few others has been on the lips of many NDC foot soldiers, accusing him of squandering state funds meant for Ghana’s fiftieth birthday celebrations.
Those allegations are yet to be tested at the court. Dr Wereko-Brobbey recently appeared before the Ghana at fifty Presidential commission of inquiry to explain how resources assigned for the celebrations were used – an opportunity he claimed he relished.
The commission, subsequently in its report to the President, recommended that he and others including Kojo Mpiani, then Chairman of the National Planning Committee of the celebrations be prosecuted for plundering public funds.
But Dr. Wereko-Brobby is unfazed about his imminent prosecution.
“I do not have any fear of that (going to jail). At the time that we did ‘Kume Preko’, we had inklings of an intent to attack but we didn’t do anything. So we don’t want to go to jail, we don’t want to become martyrs but I don’t think it’s something we want to fear...we welcome the President setting up the investigations because I think that it has opened up a lot of insights into what happened or what may not have happened.” He said.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby, recently contested for the NPP’s National Chairmanship position during the party’s 15th National Delegates congress held in Kumasi but lost to Jake Obetsebi Lamptey.
The former VRA Boss now says he is bracing himself to contest for the NPP’s flag-bearership position which comes off later this year.
