Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance is advocating the promulgation of a law that would protect consumers’ interests.
AFAG says the law is necessary to ensure consumers get value for their money.
The pressure group has begun a new initiative to get the country’s mobile telecom service providers to sit up and offer better services.
Dubbed the Voices of Telecommunication Efficiency or VOTE, the initiative will involve the deployment of hundreds of volunteers to collect signatures from dissatisfied customers.
AFAG chairman Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie says the committee will work hard to ensure sanity is restored to the sector.
“We decided to launch this initiative; go collect signatories of persons who are discontent with the services of these providers. When we collect the signatures, we shall make it public.
“In this regard, what we are seeking to achieve is that when we have the signatories we make it clear that Ghanaians are not happy with what you are doing,” he said.
Dr Afriyie said the group is hoping to push government to come up with a consumer protection law since the National Communications Authority (NCA) has failed in its mandate to protect mobile telecom customers.
“You don’t reinvest the wheel, you look at what others have done,” he stated, citing Botswana where there is a consumer protection department under the Trade Ministry to protect consumers of products.
