President Mills has yet to give his assent to the Ghana Boundary Commission Bill two weeks after Parliament passed it under a certificate of urgency.The bill is to establish a commission to negotiate proper demarcation of Ghana’s land and maritime boundaries with neighbouring countries.The rush to pass the bill was prompted by a demand by Ivory Coast for proper demarcation of the national boundaries of the two countries. It also came amidst suggestions that Ivory Coast was claiming that Ghana had encroached on Ivorian boundaries.Although several adhoc committees were set up in the past to negotiate the country's boundaries with its neighbours, there has been no final demarcation.Chairman of Parliament’s Lands and Forestry Committee, Gershon Gbedeameh said the commission can only be constituted after the President has given his assent.He said the committee will have to write to the various stakeholder institutions to bring on board their representatives.Mr Gbedeameh also played down suggestions that La Cote d’Ivoire is laying claim to portions of Ghana’s oil find.According to him, the bill to establish the negotiating commission was rushed through Parliament because it has been under consideration for too long.Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
