The Agona Swedru police have arrested five people suspected to have murdered the general overseer of the Kania Reformed Church, Reverend Kweku Bentum, at Gomoa Achiase Wednesday night.
Corporal Raymond Asaaba, the regional police Public Relations Officer, told the GNA in Cape Coast the suspects, Adam Kassana Nankana, Cosmos Baah Yirenkyi, Abubakari Adams, Francis Arhin and one woman known only as Adwoba, are in police custody pending further investigation.
He said on Good-Friday, Rev. Bentum reported to the police at Agona Swedru that one Peter Abatole has allegedly stolen his sheep. Peter was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the Agona Swedru district court on Monday April 5.
He said the court presided over by Mr E.K Sonoo granted the suspect a GH¢400.00 bail, to re-appear on Friday April 9, but last night at about 2200 hours, when Rev. Bentum and his wife were returning from church service someone shot him in the chest, killing him instantly.
His wife was also hit in the thumb and is on admission at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.
Cpl Asaaba alleged that investigations by the police revealed it was Abatole who shot and killed Rev. Bentum to prevent him from testifying against him in court on Friday.
He said after further investigations, the police retrieved the single barrelled gun allegedly used in murdering the Rev. Minister from Adam, who implicated the four others.
Meanwhile, Abatole is on the run and the police have mounted a search for him.
