The Bawku Police Command has blamed the increase in crime, especially, killings in the municipality on the lack of street lights in the township.
According to the police, there are no street lights and those who have lights in their houses do not put some in front of their houses to brighten the immediate environs and so if someone is walking in the darkness, it is difficult to identify him or her.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News on the killing of a 25-year-old woman in Bawku in the early hours of Saturday in her room during the curfew hours, the Bawku Division Crime Officer, DSP Adamu Seidu, urged the government to erect street lights to enable the police see clearly enough during the night.
“Every security personnel would tell you that Bawku is very dark in the night. Those who have lights in their homes do not have lights in front of their homes so it is very difficult to walk at night without light”, DSP Adamu told Asempa News.
He said this made them vulnerable to attacks at night because their rooms are brighter but the outsides are dark.
A 25-year-old woman in Bawku was in the early hours of Saturday shot dead in her room.
The woman, identified only as Alila, was said to have been sleeping during curfew hours when some unknown assailants shot her several times through a back window.
The incident, which occurred around 1:00am, is said to have sent shock waves through the town.
