Police investigating the murder of a 90-year-old man say they suspect some youth who have links with a prominent lawyer and rival of the deceased.
Nuumo Narh Mensah, Head of the Osuwem family at Prampram near Tema was gunned down by two unidentified men on New Year’s Day.
Police found his prostrate body in a pool of blood in his room. They suspect the murder is linked to a land dispute between Nuumo Mensah and lawyer Adumoah Bossman, 75. Both are members of the Osuwem family.
The Prampram District Police Commander ASP Richardson Kwumaku told Joy News that though lawyer Bossman, was not at Prampram when the shooting occurred, they suspected the act was carried out by persons known to him.
Five persons have been arrested in connection with the murder, two of them are prime suspects, according to police.
Mr. Bossman has denied any involvement in the murder. He told Joy News on Tuesday that he was yet to be invited by the police for questioning.
He confirmed that he was engaged in a legal battle with the deceased over the headship of the family but said he knew nothing about the murder.
Emmanuel Akwetey, 54 and Ernest Tetteh-Nortey, 34, the prime suspects, were arrested by the Tema Police Buffalo Unit at Dahwenya at dawn of Sunday.
Police suspect they were fleeing from the crime scene in a BMW vehicle with registration number GE 1359 W.
Nuumo Narh’s wife, who reported the incident to the police, told Joy News they were awoken by banging on their door shortly after midnight. The 80-year-old woman said two men forced their way into the room, wrestled with the deceased and shot him dead. She said it was too dark to identify the murderers.
Police found a spent cartridge at the scene.
Meanwhile the murder of Nuumo Mensah has left residents of P & B, a suburb of Prampram, in shock. His relatives have threatened to avenge Nuumo Mensah’s death.
However the police say they are not ruling out his wife in their investigations.
