A trigger-happy man in Bawku has been arrested on Monday for shooting indiscriminately into the air. Joy News’ Upper East Regional correspondent Joseph Osei says the real motive of the man is yet to be ascertained. The police, he said, are tight-lipped on the matter and would not even disclose the identity of the culprit. Bawku has seen considerable violence, with the locals - Mamprusis and Kusasis - engaging in a culture of bloodletting. Police have expressed worry over the matter, describing the guerrilla-like murders as “target killing.” This comes in spite of a curfew situation imposed by the interior ministry. The growing state of insecurity has affected not only businesses in the town but education as well. On Monday morning, basic school pupils in Bawku joined their colleagues across the country to take their Basic School Certificate Examinations. But they did so under tight security presence to guarantee their safety, Joseph Osei reported. The students lamented the rather deplorable conditions they endured whilst preparing for the exams. Their school periods were punctuated with regular shutdowns due to activities of gunmen raising concerns that the students might not have exhausted the whole syllabus. That notwithstanding, some of the students told Osei they have prepared well and are counting on prayers and grace of God to sail through. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
