A fierce riot between two halls of the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region has left one student unconscious.
The student has been receiving treatment at the university hospital. Many students were also injured and a number of property were left vandalised
The two traditional rival halls,Casely-Hayford Hall(Casford) and Atlantic Hall (ATL), slug it out Sunday evening during a procession organised by the Casfordians.
Even though the main cause of the violence was not clear, sources say the boys from Casford, in their procession through some part of the university, decided to use the ATL Hall as a route but were resisted by their colleagues in that hall.
This, perhaps, did not go down well with them and confusion ensued.
Students from both sides decided to hurl stones at their opponent, resulting in some casualties.
Police quickly moved in to quell the situation, of what otherwise would have been a bloody confrontation. Some arrests were made.
Myjoyonline source at the University of Cape Coast partly blamed the school authorities for the mishap.
According to the source, the authorities were aware of the procession, and having at their backdrop the rivalry between the two halls, should have put in place measures to forestall the clash.
