Ghanaian journalists have been asked to draw useful lessons from conflicts in other parts of the world and be circumspect in the performance of their duties.They should refrain from comments that could inflame passions and create confusion in the country. The call was made by panelists at a day's discussion on media freedom, free speech and responsible expression in a multi-party democracy, in Kumasi on Friday. It was organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) as part of activities marking the 10th annual constitution week celebrations. Oheneba Adusei Poku, Akyimpemhim, Madam Ernestina Akosua Akumanyi, Deputy Chairman, Finance and Administration, NCCE, Mr Kwame Opoku-Afriyie, official of NCCE, Mr Francis Kofigah and Mr Ernest Owusu-Dapaah, both lecturers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Nana Yaw Osei, Ashanti Regional Chairman, Ghana Journalists' Association, were the discussants. In attendance were security personnel, representatives of the various political parties, traditional rulers, assembly members, market women, non-governmental organizations and media practitioners.The discussants appealed to media practitioners to maintain high professionalism to win public support and confidence and expressed concern about the unbridled use of the Internet to ruin the image of the country.Madam Akumanyi expressed worry about the promotion of ethnic sentiments and corruption by some media outlets.Nana Osei said the role of the media in Ghana's socio-economic and political development must be appreciated despite shortcomings.Source: GNA
