Communications Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has called on government appointees who are required to declare their assets to do so or in breach be punished accordingly. Assets declaration is considered critical to curbing corruption, especially in countries where a political office is seen as a quick way to attain material wealth. At a forum to discuss this issue, Prof. Ken Attefuah, a legal practitioner and criminologist, explained that public declaration of assets is a measure by which public officials are required to periodically declare their income and wealth for scrutiny by a state authority. He noted that assets and interest disclosure is a major global anti-corruption issue. Though the 1992 Constitution mandates all government officials to declare their assets before taking office, some appointees in the ruling Mills administration have still not done so even after the president had directed them to that effect. Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Tuesday, Haruna Iddrisu advised his colleagues who have not yet declared their assets to obey the laws. He proposed a public discussion on the issue, saying that some key officials - the Deputy Chief of Staff - are not named in the law but in his view must declare their assets also.
