The Women’s Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE) and the World Vision - Ghana have kicked against a witches’ camp at Nabuli in the Gushegu District of the Northern Region where inmates are alleged to be practicing prostitution for their survival.
WISE says it’s against the fundamental human rights of the inmates since the Constitution of Ghana does not allow people to brand others, especially, the elderly as witches.
The “Lead” newspaper on Tuesday published that a 58-year old alleged witch, Magajia Nyaanjoo, at the witch camp had claimed that inmates of the camp practice prostitution for their survival.
Nyofum Jimba, Tamale correspondent for the “Lead” newspaper told Asempa Today that the prostitutes charge 50Gp and GH₵1 for every sexual round. They have no proper shelter, no food, no water, so the only survival for them is to resort to prostitution.
Reacting to the situation, the Executive Director for WISE, Adwoa Bami, told Asempa Today that witchcraft is spiritual and that no individual should be camped for them to suffer.
She said societies wrongly perceive the aged as witches and women are usually the most affected by the negativity.
“We should go beyond that perception and find out what is wrong with them, instead of branding them as witches,” she said.
Ms. Bami said WISE is collaborating with World Vision - Ghana to plan an educational programme for the inmates of the camp and others in the country in order to alleviate their plight.
“We are aware of what is going on in these camps, but no one has been able to establish that they are witches”, she explained.
