Students of the Commonwealth Hall on Wednesday disrupted ongoing examinations in the University of Ghana.
The Chief Examiner, Dr Francis Baniru in an interview with Joy News confirmed the disruption, adding that the examination was delayed for several minutes.
According to him, four students had their answer booklets snatched and another had his Identity Card taken away but later retrieved.
The disruption by the aggrieved students was in protest of a decision by the university authorities to turn the all-male Commonwealth Hall into a mixed gender hall.
The executive council of the university has resolved to convert the Hall as a result of what it refers to as a series of unruly behaviours by the students of the hall.
Some of the students are accused by university authorities of heckling former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and other dignitaries when they attended the University’s congregation ceremony in March this year.
By the Executive Council’s decision the hall will be turned into a mixed one as well as a graduate hall later in September.
This has angered the hall students, popularly known as Vandals, and they have vowed to resist any such attempt.
The students say they will petition the Vice President John Mahama on Wednesday and crown it with a mammoth demonstration on Thursday to the Castle.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations officer of the University of Ghana, Stella Amoah has condemned examination disruption by the students.
She said the university might be forced to beef up security during the rest of the examination, a move she feared will not be in the interest of the students.
She warned the students to desist from the unruly behaviours, adding that such behaviours will not help their case.
According to her, the executive council is expecting a report from the chief examiner as well as the security on duty before it will take a decision on the student’s action on Wednesday.
