The Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana has given a three-day ultimatum to the government to stop a decision by University authorities to convert the hall into a mixed graduate hall. Students of the all male hall, known popularly as Vandals, on Thursday held a demonstration on campus after which they presented a petition to Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. “We wish to humbly and passionately call on your office to appropriately respond to the above teething issues; by calling on the Academic Board and the University Council to annul the policy of reconstituting Commonwealth hall into a mixed gender graduate hall,” Joshua Larry, JCR president of the Commonwealth Hall said. He also called on the government to institute a commission of enquiry to probe the financial standing of the SRC project fund and alleged victimization of student leaders. “Students of Commonwealth Hall shall remain resolute for 72 hours whilst your high office responds to our concerns else we shall storm the law to have our demands met accordingly,” he warned. The Deputy Information Minister assured the students that the government will take a critical look into the matter. He said the government will not renege on its responsibilities to Ghanaians, including the students and will ensure that the rights of people are respected at all times. “We are going to give it very critical attention. Government wants to assure you that we will not renege on our responsibility to the people of this country and to Vandals. “The mandate of the president and the vice-president is to ensure that at all times citizens live peacefully and citizens' rights are respected. “We will be guided by this principle as we work on your petition. We will not let you down, we will also do our best. You are not alone in this and we know you are going to be appreciative of government’s efforts in this matter,” Okudzeto Ablakwa assured.
