The perception that students of Commonwealth Hall, popularly referred to as Vandals of the University of Ghana are not shy was evident during a planned protest they staged on Thursday.
This attitude of the students have been attributed by many to the sheer absence of female students among them in the Hall.
During their demonstration to kick against the decision by the school authorities to turn the all male hall into mixed for graduate students, some of the students were seen almost naked – they were wearing only panties.
Apart from this, some of the students made some unprintable, vulgar and profane statements in the local Akan language.
Even though the demonstration was peaceful, the students blew musketry indiscriminately; scaring students who thought they were guns shots.
The demonstration was carefully managed within the confined of the hall, ending at the gate of the Hall.
Police personnel were deployed to maintain peace within the Hall, while some patrol the university campus.
The students wore red bands and attires, to signify their determination not to allow the school authorities to replace them, with graduate students.
They carried placards with the inscriptions such as “Ya bre mo”, “Enough is enough” and “Tagoe has no chance”.
Some of the students told Asempa News that some of their colleagues are from poor families who cannot afford expensive hostels in the university and therefore the school’s decision would affect their education.
“We will not allow them to bring the graduate students. The university has a business interest in the issue. They have commercialized everything in the university,” the students alleged. They also accused the authorities of not having feelings for them.
“We cannot afford those hostels. We are not workers, but the graduates are workers, so they can go and live in hostels. We do not have money. We are being looked after by our parents,” a student said.
