A 49-year-old suspected armed robber, Yaw Sowa, who had eluded the police for the past nine months after a robbery expedition, has now been arrested after being trailed to his hideout at Asamankese.Sowa and others were allegedly involved in the robbery of a 23.4 kilogrammes of gold worth 600,000 dollars from an Indian licenced gold dealer on the Tarkwa-Apemamim Junction road on June 22, 2009.Briefing the Times, the Western Regional Police Commander, Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, said Sowa confessed during interrogation that he took part in the robbery and received GH¢6,000 as his share.Alhaji Mahama said Sowa would be charged with conspiracy to rob and robbery when he appears before a Sekondi High Court on Monday, May 10.Six accomplices, including a policeman and the driver of the Indian, have already been charged and have appeared before the court.Their next appearance is on Tuesday, May ll.Giving the background of the case, the police commander said that at about 5.30am on June 19, 2009, an Indian licensed gold dealer based in Accra, Mr Ashok Kathari; who had gone to Tarkwa to buy gold, was stopped at Bonsaso on the main Tarkwa-Apemamim road by Lance Corporal Frank Addo, who is stationed at Tarkwa.He said Addo ordered Mr Kathari to open his car boot for inspection and in the process, he collected the gold and a pistol from him.Suddenly, four men emerged at the scene and together with Addo, they bolted with the gold. The police however arrested Addo and Kathari's driver who were put before court on June 22, 2009. Sowa fled and went into hiding.Source: The Ghanaian Times
